چکیده

This paper studies the spatial implications of structural change. The secular decline in spending on agricultural goods hurts workers in rural locations and increases the return to moving towards nonagricultural labor markets. We combine detailed spatial data for the U.S. between 1880 and 2000 with a novel quantitative theory to understand this process and to quantify its macroeconomic implications. We find that spatial reallocation across labor markets accounts for almost none of the aggregate decline in agricultural employment. Despite ample migration, population net flows were only weakly correlated with agricultural specialization. Spatial reallocation nevertheless had important aggregate effects. Without migration income per capita would have been 15% lower and spatial welfare inequality would have been substantially higher, especially among low-skilled, agricultural workers. ∗We thank seminar participants at Boston University, Stanford, Penn State, UNC, the SED, the EEA, the NBER Macroeconomic Across Time and Space Conference, the Edinburgh Workshop on Agricultural Productivity and the Yale International Lunch for very helpful comments. We are particularly thankful to Simon Alder, Timo Boppart, David Lagakos, Doug Gollin, Kjetil Storesletten and Fabrizio Zilibotti for their suggestions. We also thank Costas Arkolakis, Pete Klenow, and Aleh Tsyvinski for their comments. Zara Contractor, Andrés Gvirtz and Adam Harris provided outstanding research assistance. †Yale University. Modeling inequality levels with the help of spatial and non-spatial indices in northern Khorasan

This paper aims to explain the inequality and imbalance in the developmental levels of 6 selected cities in North Khorasan. The paper seeks to answer these two questions as to whether the spatial and non-spatial indices in regional disparities have an effect on equality? And can we achieve a functional model based on the evaluation of indicators? In order to achieve the goal and the answer to t...

Study of the role and function of medium-sized cities in the spatial development of the region (Case Study: Nasimshahr)

The study of the roles and functions of cities and their developments is an important question in modern geographic studies. The unbalanced spatial distribution of populations, irregular migration to metropolises and imbalances in the distribution of economic opportunities between regions have led to focus on the idea of medium-sized cities as one of the most effective approaches to planning ...

Assessment of Land Surface Temperature Trend and Its Spatial Correlation with Landscape Structural Elements in Rasht Watershed, Guilan Province

Remote sensing data play an important role in environmental planning and monitoring. The current study aimed to investigate the land surface temperature (LST) and the effect of environmental factors on the LST, to identify the temporal-spatial patterns and determine the hot spots in the period of 2013 to 2019, using Landsat 8 images. The effect of spectral indices: Normalized Difference Build-u...

Spatial panel data models with structural change

Spatial panel data models are widely used in empirical studies. The existing theories of spatial models so far have largely confine the analysis under the assumption of parameters stabilities. This is unduely restrictive, since a large number of studies have well documented the presence of structural changes in the relationship of economic variables. This paper proposes and studies spatial pane...
